Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol, an American artist, was a pioneering figure in the Pop Art movement. His work, which transformed pop culture into high-end art, has continued to appreciate in value since his death in 1987. Warhol's pieces explore the connection between artistic expression, advertising, and the celebrity culture that was prevalent in the 1960s. He once famously remarked, "I love Los Angeles. I love Hollywood. They're so beautiful. Everything's plastic, but I love plastic. I want to be plastic."

After moving to New York in 1949, Warhol began exhibiting his work in various galleries during the late 1950s, eventually gaining recognition as a commercial and controversial artist/illustrator. He worked with a range of media, including painting, silk screening, photography, film, and sculpture, before switching completely to silk screening in 1963. Warhol defended his decision to embrace mechanical means in his art, stating that hand painting would take too long and was out of step with the times.

When he was shot by the radical Feminist Valerie Solanas, in June of 1968, he made the statement "Before I was shot, I always thought that I was more half-there than all-there - I always suspected that I was watching TV instead of living life. People sometimes say that the way things happen in movies is unreal, but it's the way things happen in life that's unreal. The movies make emotions look so strong and real, whereas when things do happen to you it's like watching television - you don't feel anything. Right when I was being shot, and ever since, I knew that I was watching television. The channels switch, but it's all television.

Although he took a break from painting to focus on film and photography in the early 1970s, he returned to gestural brushwork and created monumental portraits. Collecting an Andy Warhol artwork is not only an expression of appreciation for modern art but also a wise investment, given the consistent appreciation in the value of his pieces over the years.
